The “Partnership for Open Society” Initiative invites you to participate in the public discussion titled “Challenges Facing Armenian Statehood”. The event will take place on April 14th from 12:00 – 16:00 at the Congress Hotel Ballroom (1st Italy Street, Yerevan).
There are processes presently underway in the Armenian social and political landscape, which are endangering the hard-earned independence, and democratic institution building that had been taking shape over the past 23 years of Armenian statehood. These changes are, in large part, due to the systemic crisis throughout Armenia’s democratic institutions, which has resulted in our inability to properly withstand and overcome external influences, even when they explicitly go against our own national interest and lead us down a path to the loss of independent statehood. Since September 3rd 2013, Armenia’s democratic institutions, its national security, its protection for human rights and fundamental freedoms, its sustainability of free markets and social justice, and the national identity based on historical and cultural values have been facing degradation and disintegration, a dangerous realization leading to very serious concerns among society.
Unable to express deference towards this reality any longer, the time has come to join forces, consolidate efforts, express our grave concerns, and collectively try to find paths to actively mitigate and counteract the dangerous developments undermining Armenia’s democratic sovereignty. We hope that this discussion, and similar events, can serve as such a platform for civil society and all stakeholders, be they scientists, artists, civil initiatives and coalitions, students, intellectuals, businessmen, the Diaspora, or any other citizen of Armenia.
